Progress of the Toilet. Dress Completed

Coloured engraving depicting a female figure standing in front of a mirror with a female attendant behind. This engraving belongs to the three part satirical series Progress of the Toilet first published by James Gillray, which ridicules the impractical extravagance that required women to change three times a day. In this third and final image the woman is shown wearing a wig in the style known as victime la coiffure; a popular but contentious, short tousled style that was modelled on the guillotined heads of the French aristocracy during the Revolution
