The Queen's Staircase ceiling, Hampton Court Palace
The Queen's Staircase ceiling (detail), showing the monogram of King George II (1727-60) and Queen Caroline. In 1734 King George II (1727-60) and Queen Caroline commissioned William Kent to decorate the staircase to the Queen's Apartments, which had remained unfinished since the time of Queen Mary II (1689-94). Kent created a trompe loeil oval ceiling within a painted gilded frame, decorated with classical figures and the King and Queen's monogram
