The Republican Attack, 1795
Gillray's caricature shows Charles James Fox, Richard Sheridan and their supporters attacking King George III's coach, dressed in revolutionary garb. The mob demands Peace and Bread upon a French flag. Pitt drives the coach, trampling Britannia in his haste to escape. On 29 October 1795 the King's coach had been attacked on its way to the State Opening of Parliament. London was in a state of unrest after a poor harvest, high taxes and military failure. A large mob targeted the coach, throwing stones and missiles at the windows
