A View of the Garden Entrance of St James's Palace, 1786
An assassination attempt on King George III by Margaret Nicholson, a former domestic servant. The attack was unsuccessful; Nicholson was seized immediately by Yeomen Warders. The King took pity on her, shouting out: the poor creature is mad, do not hurt her. She has not hurt me. George's calm and compassionate response to the attack endeared him to his people; he was greeted with cheers at his next public appearance at Kew
