Commemorative sign in the village of Corfe Castle, Dorset, on the site of the murder of Edward the Martyr in 978 - he was the eldest son of King Edgar, and King of the English from 975 until his death. It reads "Edward the Martyr King of Wessex treacherously stabbed at Corves gate in A.D. 978 by his stepmother Elfrida"
