Volta, Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio (1745-1827). Italian physicist known for the invention of the battery in the 1800s. First electric battery, known as Voltaic Pile'. It consists of pairs of discs of copper and zinc stacked and separated by pieces of cardboard or felt impregnated with water or brine. brought into contact, they produce electricity. GERMANY.
