Houdini and the Daily Mirror handcuff challenge

Page from the Daily Illustrated Mirror (late the Daily Mirror) from 14th March 1904, reporting on the famous and sensational handcuff challenge at the London Hippodrome in which a representative from the Mirror challenged Harry Houdini, the Handcuff King to escape from some specially made handcuffs, which, allegedly, a Birmingham blacksmith had spent five years crafting. Houdini at first refused, but eventually relented, performing the feat at the Hippodrome on 17 March 1904 when he escaped from the cuff in just over an hour, much to the delight of the crowded auditorium.
