St Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral, St Petersburg
View of the St Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral on Zayachy Ostrov (Hare Island), St Petersburg, Russia, from across the River Neva. The Cathedral is inside the Fortress, and is dominated by the bell tower with its tall spire. The Fortress was originally built under Peter the Great, and was completed in 1733. The cathedral was closed in 1919 and turned into a museum in 1924. It is still officially a museum today, but religious services resumed in 2000. Most of the Russian rulers are buried there
