First fully successful westbound North Atlantic flight

Captain Charles Kingsford Smith, co-pilot Evert van Dijk, navigator John Patrick (Paddy) Saul and wireless operator John Stannage, with the Southern Cross aeroplane (VH-USU) in which they made the first fully successful westbound North Atlantic flight on 23-24 June 1930, flying from Ireland to Newfoundland. The route was from Portmarnock Beach (near Dublin) to Harbour Grace (Newfoundland), distance 1, 900 miles. The time taken was 31 hours 30 minutes
