Almiruete Carnival Guadalajara, Spain 2003-2024
Wearing masks symbolising nature and wearing cow bells the men from the tiny village of Almiruete (pop.36) come down from the mountains and collect the womenfolk before lapping the village with a distinctive dancing strut. Carnival was banned for 40 years under the Franco dictatorship being considered too pagan. However, the village being so small and near the top of the Guadalajara mountain range in central Spain carried on its folklore traditions unobserved by the authorities
