Feb. 12, 1953 - Canvey Passes First Big Test.: Fresh troops took up positions on Canvey Island's battered sea walls today as the 17-ft high spring tide started to flow up the Thames Estuary. They took the place of the night trols which had started the new flood protection system. Engineer and service chiefs in charge of the operation had 30 front line men manning the see defences and another 1000 troops in reserved ready. to be flung into any sector if a breach occurred. Photo shows Men of the Royal Engineers working almost waist-deep in mud building a track to enable Bren Gun carriers to take sandbags to the sea walls. at Canvey today
