May 04, 1953 - British Comet Airliner Crashes Near Calcutta.. Forty-Three Killed In Mysterious Accident. Investigators are proceeding into the mysterious crash over the week-end of a British Comet Jet Airliner. The machine was seen to nose-dive like a ball of fire over a village - only six minutes after taking off from Dum Dum airport, Calcutta, India - on the journey to London. There were no survivors of the Forty-three passengers and crew.
