May 04, 1953 - British Comet Airliner Crashes Near Calcutta.. Forty-Three Killed In Mysterious Accident. Investigators are proceeding into the mysterious crash over the week-end of a British Comet Jet Airliner. The machine was seen to nose-dive like a ball of fire over a village - only six minutes after taking off from Dum Dum Airport, Calcutta, India.
