May 05, 1957 - Tragedy of the Mille Miglia Road Race. Marquis de Portago - with Peter Collins. The Spanish Racing driver - wealthy Marquis de Portago and his co driver were killed when their Ferrari car crashed into the crowd - near Brescia during the Mille Miglia Road Race.. Twelve spectators also lost their lives in the crash - which was caused by a tyre bursting. Keystone Photo Shows: The Marquis de Portago - in his car - with on right Peter Collins of Britain - just before start of the race.. (Collins was driving a Ferrari and had to retired 140 miles from the finish - owing to a broken back axle, after having been in the lead for nine hours)
