Sep. 13, 1957 - Thirteen Houses - Two Shops Swallowed By 120Ft. Crater In Lancashire Street.: A creeping earthquake is swallowing houses - one after another - in the Lancashire town of Farnworth. By last night thirteen houses and two shops had been wrecked - and more than 350 people have been evacuated - but nobody has been hurt. The crater was started by a fracture in a sewage drain - 19ft. down. It is feared that if there is more rain - the rate and area of the land collapse would increase - the whole area lives in fear of their homes disappearing. Photo shows The scene as the crater stretches across the roadway - in Farnworth, Lancashire. Many homes have disappeared
