Aug. 08, 1957 - Plane Goes Off The Runway - On To The Railway. Crash Landing Near Southend: Thirteen people had a lucky escape yesterday when a passenger-freighter aircraft in which they were travelling crash-landed at Rochford, Essex. It skidded on the runway on landing at Southend Airport from Calais, ploughed through a boundary fence and stopped on the railway embankment. The aircraft, a Bristol freighter was carrying three cars as well as the three man crew and ten passengers.
