Jan. 21, 1959 - Operation in hole in the road: 38-year old demolition worker, Reginald Graham, of High Heaton, was diggin in a 10-feet deep foundation trench in Westmoreland-road, Newcastle-on-Tyne yesterday, when the basement wall of a demolished housed caved in, and a ton of masonry crashed down, trapping him by his left leg. For more than an hour workmates tried to free him - with the aid of a giant crane. Doctors on the spot conferred - then told Mr. Graham: We must amputate'. Three nurses, two doctors and surgeon, Mr. Ivor Frew went down into the trench, and is 15 minutes they amputated his left leg up to the knee so that he could be lifted clear. Photo shows the operation is over.and the surgeon, sleeves rolled up, helps to lift Reginald Graham out of the trench
