Jan. 01, 1959 - Three killed and twenty two injured as train blazes after crash: Three people were killed and twenty two injured when a Glasgow tram caught fire after being in collision with a heavy lorry which was reversing in the fog. A steel tube on the lorry smashed into the tram, tore down the staircase column, cut through the electrical junction box, severed the cables, and started a fire. Flames swept through the tram with terrifying speed, and the passengers scrambled to get out. People on the upper deck smashed the windows and jumped, some broke their legs. Others were dragged out by rescuers, but three were trapped in the blistering heat, so fierce that it molted the tram's metal framework. The dead were two women passengers and the tram driver.
