Big Earthquakes Rock north Japan. Two Violent earthquakes struck an extensive area in Northern Japan Thursday (May 1), Killing 38 persons, injuring many, and destroying 800 buildings. Fires and tidal waves followed, driving ships on the rocks, and sinking many fishing boats. It was the worst earth quake since the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska in 1964. The northern Hapan earthquake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale, just short of the 7.9 which leveled Tokyo and Yokohama in 1923 killing 100.000 people.
