Big Earthquakes Rock north Japan. Two Violent earthquakes struck an extensive area in Northern Japan Thursday May 17 1968, Killing 38 people, injuring many, and destroying 800 buildings. Fires and tidal waves followed, driving ships on the rocks, and sinking many fishing boats. It was the worst earth quake since the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska in 1964.
