Accidents - Disasters - Fires - Floods - Tragedies
Feb. 26 Saved from death - in seven minutes. Jet aircraft goes into the sea - from aircraft carrier. In a drama which lasted for exactly seven minuted, pilot Commander J.E. Davis (USN) - was saved from death in an accident aboard the United States Aircraft Carrier Shangri La during Nato manceuvres off the coast in a Navy F8U-1 Crusader Jet Fighter - when the machine veered to the right as result an apparent failure in the linkage between the place and the catapsult. The machine was almost righted - when the right rear wheel skidded off the dark into the gun tub below. The aircraft rolled over across the gun tub- and plunged over the side into the sea below - tail first. The series was taken by Airman J.A. Warren of Florida - with a Fairchild K-20 aerial camera - in approx 20 seconds. The aircraft floated alongside the aircraft carrier - and David did not clear the plane until after it had submerged. He was rescued and treated in the sick bay - for his only injury a one inch cut to his left elbow. He was recovered from the water by helicopter approx seven minutes after the launch started and was in the sick bay three minutes later
