Apr. 05 Tangshan City where up to 500, 000 died: These are the first unofficial, uncensored pictures out of China - which show some of the damage caused by the July earthquake-the World's worst for a slow moving train as it pulled away from the industrial city of Tangahan, epicentre of the earthquake, 100 miles east of Peking. Millions people lived in the city before the quake and the death tollhas been put at 100, 000 by official Chinese sources and at 500, 000 by foreign estimated. The natural phenomenon was made worse by a man-made one-a honeycomb of coal mines below the city. Their collapse as violent tremors shcok the city opened up vast sink-holes into which an entire hospital and a train are sold to have disappeared. The railway system in and around the city was so badly hit that before it could be reppened repairs were needed for 144 miles of line.
