Mar. 03, 1960 - Thirty four Africans die in riots. Casualties after the shooting.: It is reported that thirty four Africans died today - and a further 100 wounded - when police opened fire on natives at Sharpeville, thirty miles from Johannesburg. The rioting started during the native campaign against the rule of forcing them to carry passes. Africans screaming Africa besieged the local police station for several hours. Jet aircraft which screamed overhead in an attempt to frighten the Africans only made them more angry. Photo shows casualties after the shooting in which the many Africans lost their lives - at Sharpeville, near Johannesburg
