Sep. 09, 1961 - American tank caught fire: A heavy American tank of the type M48 which went together with 23 other tank vehicles to the training are Grafenwohr caught fire in Nuremberg and burnt out completely. The crew of four men could get into safety. Detonations of MG munition and 78 armour piercing shells made it impossible to extinguish the fire. The place of accident had to be secured, and the surrounding houses had to be evacuated. Until late at night on Sept. 6th all traffic was blocked by the burning tank
