1963 - Road opens up in woolwich and Lorry Crashes into hole. The day the earth opened up. Eight bus routes were diverted today after a lorry had crashed into a hole which appeared in the roadway in Plumstead Road, Woolwich this morning. The 22 year old driver managed to jump from his cab as the road disappeared beneath him he was unhurt. Photo shows the hole in the road as the tail of the lorry is all that can be seen after the crash this morning
