Oct. 10, 1963 - Italian Dam Disaster Over 1000 dead: Shortly before midnight, the Vaiont Dam - third biggest in the World burst and submerged the town of Longarone (pop 2000) in the Italian Alps north of Venice, Early reports put the death roll at over 1000 although communications in the area are completely disrupted. Troops have been called in. Photo shows a view of the inside of the Vaoint dam when it was nearing completion in 1960
