Oct. 10, 1963 - Thousands feared dead in Italian Dam Disaster. Rescue workers search for bodies: It is feared that more than 4, 000 people lost their lives when part of a mountain collapsed and crashed into the 873ft concrete Vaiont Dam causing 150 million tons of water to crash over the top and flood the Piave river valley. Six villages and a town were reduced to a mass of rubble less than 30 inches high, and the town of Longarone (pop 4, 700) has been almost completely destroyed.
