Oct. 10, 1963 - Italian Dam burst: Shortly before midnight, the Vaiont Dam - third biggest in the World burst and submerged the town of Longarone (pop 2000) with great loss of life. Communications in the area are completely disrupted and troops have been rushed to the area. The dam is situated in the Italian Alps north of Venice. Photo shows a reflection study of the Vajont dam when it was nearing completion three years ago. The dam is 873 ft high and 72 ft at the base
