Oct. 10, 1963 - Italian Dam Burst: Shortly before midnight the Dam of Vaiont - third biggest in the World - in the Italian Alps north of Venice. The town of Longarone (pop 2000) is reported to be completely submerged, communications in the area are completely disrupted and troops have been rushed in. Photo shows A View of the dam when it was nearing completion three years ago, showing the mountains terrain in which it is situated
