This unusually high rate of population growth has completely collapsed the drainage system. As the population swelled, dumping of sewage, together with heavy mud deposits from theHooghly River, on which the city stands, has so seriously filled the city's already inadequate sewers that over 30% of them have become checked, thus causing heavy flooding and dislocation of traffic after rainfall.
