Feb. 02, 1966 - ABERTAN CHILDREN BACK AT SCHOOL. Nearly 200 Aberfan children went bank to school yesterday and stood in silent tribute to their 116 friends who died in the tip disaster. The children, aged 11 to 15, from Aberfan senior school, were together for the first time since the tragedy 42 days ago. Their new school across the valley at Troedyrhiw already has 162 pupils. But yesterday the Aberfan children went to assembly on their own. The headmaster, Mr. Joseph Lambert, welcomed them, then the children sang hymns and said prayers - Just as they did on the last day in their old school before it was swamped by the Black Avalanche. Nine prefabricated classrooms have been built at Troedyrhiw and the staff of 11 doubled for the new intake. But the Aberfan children will not have their own classrooms. Mr, Lambert explained: They will sit with other children. That is the best way. He told his own pupils: Be kind to the new children and shown them around. Afterwards Mr. Lambert said: The Aberfan children can be helped by other children more than anyone else. My boys and girls will be very good for them. They are lovely children. PHOTO SHOWS:-MRS. D.
