Aug. 08, 1965 - Gassed Workmen rescued from Sewer: Five firemen were injured in a struggle 20ft. below ground yesterday as they attempted to rescue three gassed workmen trapped in a sewer. The trapped men tried to fight off their rescuers for they were the victims of trichlorethylane, a type of gas which renders a man hopelessly drunk. Trichlorethylene victims reel about in a helpless state. Often they violently resist attempts to rescue them before slumping into a docile condition. Yesterday's struggle was in a 3ft. high water and slush failed tunnel beneath Dulwich Wood Avenue, Norwood. One of the trapped workmen lashed out at the firemen, two of whom had their breathing apparatus knocked from their faces and were over one by the fumes.
