Aug. 08, 1963 - Boys rescued from pit. Two boys from cheadle Hulme, Cheshire, set out to help in the search for a four - year-old boy who was lost in some woods, and themselves became lost in a disused mine at Adderley edge. They were half a mile inside and hundreds of feet below ground, and their torches had run out. It was 23 hours before the tow boys. David Dick, 16, and Ian Lewis, 12 were found and brought to the surface. photo shows after 23 hours of anxious searching and waiting, sixteen-year-old David Dick and his father embrace as he comes out of the mine
