May 17, 1968 - Big Earthquakes Rock North Japan: Two violent earthquakes struck an extensive area in Northern Japan on Thursday May 17, 1968, killing 38 people, injuring many, and destroying 800 buildings. Fires and tidal waves followed driving ships on the rocks, and sinking many fishing boats. It was the worst earthquake since the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska in 1964. The Northern Japan earthquake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale, just short of the 7.9 which leveled Tokyo and Yokohama in 1923 killing 100, 000 people.
