May 17, 1968 - 37 Die In Japan Earthquake: An earthquake in Northern Japan yesterday killed at least 37 people. More than 200 are seriously hurt and 11 people are missing. The tremor shock Southern Hokkaido and Northern Honshu islands. Buildings, highways, railroads and industrial plants have been shattered in many towns and cities.
