Oct. 10, 1970 - 24 Dead In Bridge Collapse. At least 24 men were killed when a giant steel and concrete section of Australia's largest bridge collapsed on a riverside street in Melbourne. Another 25 men are missing, feared to have been trapped when the 150yd long section of the West Gate Bridge being built over the Yarra River flattened a line of sheds.
