Feb. 02, 1972 - Seven killed when Ira Bomb Wrecks Officers Mess at Aldershot.: An IRA bomb wrecked the officers's mess of the 16th. Parachute Regiment at Aldershot yesterday killing five women domestic workers, a civilian man and a Roman Catholic padre. Sixteen others, including several Army and RAF officers were injured. The official IRA in Dubblin immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing and said it was in retaliation for Londonderry's Bloody Sunday battle involving the Parachute Regiment when 13 civilians were shot dead on Jan, 30. When it became known that six of the seven dead were civilians the IRA issued another statement regretting the civilian casualties and claiming that their intelligence reports had indicated that no civilians frequented the officers mes. The bomb believed to have contained about 50lb of explosives had been planted in a car outside the officers mess.
