Aug. 19, 1971 - TILL NOW WORST HELICOPTER ACCIDENT IN WEST-GERMANY: During the till now worst helicopter-accident.... in West Germany on August 18th 1971 37 American soldiers died near Pegnitz. Most of them burned after the machine crashed. In about 300 yards height both rotorblades broke off. The reason for the disaster is not clear yet. In the helicopter was the crew of four men and 33 soldiers, who should be transported to the US-Airport Grafenwohr from Ludwigsburg. Nobody could be saved. It is not clear yet, whether the helicopter exploded already in the air or after the crash. Ops.: Hundreds of spectators who saw the rescue-work. The US-ambulance men couldn't save one of the soldiers who died in the flames. Their corps were covered with white plastic sheets (background)
