Jun. 06, 1974 - 34 Die and many injured in blast at Chemical Plant Flixborough, near Scunthorpe: Atleast 34 people were killed last night after a massive explosion ripped through the Nypro Chemical plantat Flixborough, near Sounthorpe, Lincolnshire. The explosion was heard 30 miles away. Some of the injured were from the village of Flixborough which took the full force of the blast and late last night the village was evacuated as a huge cloud of poison gas poured from the factory. The blaze from the explosion is not expected to be put out for a least 48 hours. Photo shows: A body being taken away this morning with the fire still blazing in the background
