Feb. 28 KATMANDU CURES HIPPIES: FIRST HIPPY WEDDING IN NEPAL The clear air and holiness of the Nepalase llames have proved an attractio for the world's hippies. Now the first pair have been married and declared their intention of withdrawing from their hippy life and returning to the U.S.A. to lead a normal family life thanks to Nepal and the Lord of Peace and Prosperity'.KNUT-RAINER PFLUGHAUPT, 21, from West Germany, became a hippy in 1962 and his hippy wife LAURA SHEEHAN, 21 of Milli Valley, California, became a hippy wanderer in 1967. They met in 1968 in Athens and since have wandered around the world finally arriving in Nepal in Febraury and were married on Feb. 28. They were married by the Lama of the Chinese monastery in Katmandu, for a fee of 2 dollars. Each was dressed in the colourful dress of the country, and drove six miles from the capital to the monastery in an old jeep. They had to run the gauntlet of a crowd of hippies and local people. They finally reached His Holiness Chinie-Lama who read out passages from the Book of Marriage, gave the couple a white scarf, and finally blessed them by putting on the former schoolteachers brow a vermillion mark. The couple then lit lamps at the feet of the Golden Buddha statue, bowed low, prayed for two minutes to the Lord of Peace and Nirvana. Afterwards the Lama said I have married over 15, 000 people during80 years of priesthood but this is the first Hippy ceremony. The lama is 94 years old, and stillcracks nuts in his teeth and uses glasses only when reading. Katmandu has become a shangri-la of hippies, 10, 000 came last year and this year 15, 000 are expected. It is cheap and a hippy can get by on £2 weekly. All the drugs are freely available and government and people sympathetic and they say the eternally snow-covered Himalayas console disturbed souls. Last year 500 hippies assembled at Dhulikhel, 20-miles east of Katmandu and planned to construct a hippy temple there but were chased away by locals who objected to the open-air co-habitation activity. On the other hand the locals were pleased with the wedding because it meant Westerners realized the value of their culture now - according to Tibetans - being slowly extinguished by invading Chinese
