Oct. 10, 1961 - The words of Ulbricht: This poster, put up on the Western side of the border between East and West Berlin, shows who much one may believe the words of Ulbricht, the leading man of the Soviet zone of Germany. The words (rough translation as follows) were said by Ulbricht on June 15th, 1961 at an international press conference in East Berlin as answer to a question put to him by one of the journalists: I understand your question in such a way that there are people in West Germany who wish that we will mobilize the masons (and workmen on buildings) of the capital of the DDR (German Democratic Republic, official title in East Germany for the Soviet Zone), to erect a wall. It is not known to me that there exists such an intention. The workmen on buildings are mainly busy with building flats and they are fully occupied with this.
