Admiral Karl Donitz, former German naval commander

May 05, 1972 - Admiral of the Fleet, Karl Donitz, almost deaf: The former successor of Adolf Hitler, Admiral of the Fleet Karl Donitz, is spending his old age in Hamburg. Donitz, born on Sept. 16th 1891 in Grunau near Berlin, was commander-in-chief of the submarines after 1936 and supreme commander of the German navy. After Hitler died he set up the new government as successor of Hitler on May 2nd 1945 in Plon; he ordered the capitulation of Germany on May 7th and 8th. On May 23rd 1945 Donitz was taken into custody by the English and condemned to 10 years arrest by the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg in October 1946. He spent this time in Spandau. Today the 81 year old Donitz is living in a small flat in Hamburg.
