Aerial view, Windsor Castle

Aug. 08, 1959 - Home of Sovereigns: For over 850 years Windsor Castle has been the chief residence of English sovereigns. Begun by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, its broad outlines date mainly from the 14th century. Extensive restorations was undertaken in the 19th century. In the absence of Queen Elizabeth, the State Apartments are open to the public in the summer. The other parts of the castle are open daily.
