Jun. 06, 1955 - Al Azhah Sheikh on trial for heresy opens in Egypt.: The trial of Sheikh Abdul Hamid Bekheit, a teacher in Ossul Din College of El Azhar University, before the University Disciplinary Council opened recently. Sheikh Bakheit is charged with publishing a wrong interpretation of the precepts of Islam on the observabts of fasting in Ramadan. He expressed the opinion that Muslims need not fast in Ramadan if they find it difficult. This is the first time in the history of Azhar University that one of the Professors stands trial before the Disciplinary Council. Photo shows Sheikh Abdul Hamid Bekheit seen with MTRE.
