Jul. 07, 1956 - Egypt's Colonel Nasser Grabs Suez Canal. Latest Challenge To The West. Colonel Nasser the Egyptian Prime Minister challenged the West by announcing that his country has seized the Suez Canal. This announcement was made when Nasser addressed an excited crowd of 100, 000 in Alexandria. He claimed that his country would use the income from the dam to construct the Asian Dam - for which Britain and United States had recently refused aid. Nasser thus tears up the 1954 agreement with Great Britain - the biggest holder in the canal - and its biggest user. This follows the recent withdrawal of British troops from Egypt.. In London the grab has been called an act of expropriation - for Egypt had solemnly recognised Britain's right to retain her stake in the canal until 1968. Special Cabinet meetings are to be held in London to study the latest moves.
