May 05, 1959 - Inciding in Istanbul during Propaganda tour of Ismet Inonu-opposition leader.: There were many incedents in Istanbul recently during the propaganda tour of M. Ismet Inonu, Chief of the Opposition and leader of the Turkish Republican Party. In spite of police precaution - sympathisers of M. Inonu lined the streets to the airport in the early hours of the morning. At Tapkapi, the entrance to Istanbul Town - 2000 demonstrators - supports of the Government - tried to hurl themselves at M. Inonu's car- and there were many injured when the police intervened. Students congregated in Beyazit Square - centre of the University buildings cheered the opposition leader. A huge crowd welcomed M. Inonu at the Repiblican Party Centre - but police had to use tear gas against the demonstrators outside the buildings.
