More than fifty natives lost their lives when police opened fire - during the native campaign against the rule which forces them to carry passes - at Sharpeville, about thirty miles from Johannesburg.. Jet aircraft which screamed down on the natives - in attempt to frighten them - only made them more angry.. The shooting of the Africans has created strong protests from all parts of the world.
