Mar. 03, 1960 - Original Picture.. Massacre of Africans at Sharpeville. More than fifty natives lost their lives when police opened fire - during the native campaign against the rule which forces them to carry passes - at Sharpeville, about thirty miles from Johannesburg.. Jet aircraft which screamed down on the natives - in attempt to frighten them - only made them more angry.. The shooting of the Africans has created strong protests from all parts of the world. Keystone Photo Shows: The Registration card which the natives were forced to carry.. This is the card which created the disturbances leading to the shooting of the Africans
