Oct. 05, 1961 - The United Nations opened their doors to their 100th member: Sierra Leone, a former British colony in western Africa that became independent last April 27th. Sierra Leone, whose capital is Freetown, has a population of 2, 005, 000 inhabitants, of which less than 4, 000 are white. It's main resource is palm oil. It is also rich in iron, diamonds, and chromium. Sir Milton Margai (pictured) is Prime Minister of Sierra Leone
