May 05, 1964 - The Exiled Sultan of Zanzibar Gets £100, 000 Gift From Britain. The exiled Sultan of Zanzibar (34) who is now living in a semi-detached house on the South Coast - is to get a present of £100, 000 from Britain. The Sultan was penniless when he fled from his island in January with his wife and entourage of 55 relatives - friends and household staff. He is being helped because Zanzibar was a protectorate until it gained independence a month before the Sultan was overthrown.
