Sep. 09, 1960 - 13 African States and Cyprus admitted to UN: As one of its first acts, the 15th regular session of the UN General Assembly, which opened in New York today, unanimously admitted 14 new States to membership in the United Nations. This brings the total number of states members of the UN to 96, almost double its original membership.
